The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has organized a national seminar on the priestly commitment toward “the excluded and oppressed community” within the Indian church and outside.

The June 28-29 seminar on “the priestly commitment towards the empowerment of dalits and building inclusive communities” was organized on the occasion of the closing of the year of priests. It was organized in collaboration with the regional commissions for SC/ST in Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Chennai.

Apart from the 250 priests, the seminar was attended by the chairman of CBCI commission Archbishop Marampudi Joji, Archbishop A. M. Chinnappa, Bishop Neethinathan, Bishop Soundhara Raju, Bishop Antony Poola and Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes.

All the participants were from various grass-roots movements, institutions and parishes all over India, seeking a better understanding of dalit reality, which would help them renew their priestly commitment and pastoral creativity towards the community, said a CBCI statement.

The seminar aimed at assessing and accumulating the knowledge about dalit problems spiritually, intellectually and sociologically. It also wanted to prepare a concept, agenda and theology, and a plan of action to help the suffering dalit people..

The seminar concluded that the priests should make strong and systematic dalit network. The educated dalits should be involved in the dalit emancipatory process and projects, opportunities for dalit entrepreneurship must be provided and they need to work in alliance and solidarity with the other human right movements.
