The Church of England has launched new initiatives to draw in members from the ethnic minorities, who were feeling unwelcome in the mainstream churches in the country.
“The Church of England is open to all and it is disappointing to hear that any individual feels they have not been made welcome in any church,” a spokesman of the Church of England said.
He said that the Church is doing more to engage with ethnic minority worshippers, news agency PTI reported.
“As an organization, we are taking a range of steps to encourage and nurture Christians from all ethnic groups, including launching a ‘fresh expression’ of church in Birmingham aimed specifically at Asian Christians, and holding conferences to encourage more minority ethnic priests,” the spokesman added.
The statement comes after a major conference in Derby highlighted the feeling of rejection among Christians of Indian origin in mainstream churches in Britain.
Ram Gidoomal, a leading member of the Asian Christian community, said that Indian-origin Christians who felt unwelcome in mainstream churches were forming their own small churches where they sing and pray in Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil and Punjabi.
He said there were at least 200 such small churches founded by disenchanted Christians across Britain as a response to feeling of rejection.
Asian Christians numbered nearly 75,000 in Britain.
The Church of England, however, said that nearly 7,000 south Asians regularly worshipped in its churches.
